Be Where Your Feet Are in Your Marriage

This was originally posted on awifelikeme.com A popular phrase in our house is, “Be where your feet are,” and I talk about it all the time. For the past few weeks, I’ve been wondering if I say it too much, if it’s on too many signs in my home. But then, I listened to “The Glorious in the Mundane” podcast by Christy Nockels, and she said repetitive phrases are good for our souls. So I’m sticking with that.Be where your feet are.Be where your feet are.I can hear my husband saying this to me when he was still my boyfriend.I can hear his voice saying it to me now when my mind leaps into the future or slides back into the past. I lose the moments, the moments with him, when my heart isn’t where my feet are.And although I see “Be where your feet are” all over my house and repeat it to myself constantly, there is still a disconnect and a pull for my attention to go anywhere but here, anywhere but now, with my husband. So I fight to be incredibly intentional to draw my thoughts and actions back to the present and back to the precious moments with my husband.Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.” (NIV)This verse confirms the “Be where your feet are” phrase. Be still. Know Who is in control. Determine to not let these marriage moments pass by.What does this look like? Here are three simple steps that have helped me be more present in my marriage that can be applied to your own:

  1. Limit phone use when together, especially on date nights – in or out of the home.
  2. Focus on him and what he’s saying instead of letting our minds wander to the to-do list or the dirty dishes that need to be washed. Be where you are.
  3. Be intentional about the alone time spent with him. Block of times and days in the calendar to devote to your marriage — it works.

More than anything,  soak up the memory that’s being made right in front of you. Think about exactly where your feet are and put your mind and soul there too. You will never ever regret being present.Interested in creating a thriving marriage?
